26 June > 12 September 19995 x 5 chairs: the classics of Finnish Modernism
Finland was later than the other Scandinavian countries in emerging
as a national entity with its own design philosophy. But it was
able to attract international attention at the triennials in Milan
during the fifties.
The pioneer of Finnish design is undoubtedly
Alvar Aalto. His designs for furniture in laminated wood are counted
among the classics of modern design. This exhibition presents a
picture of innovative ideas from Modernism to the present day,
on the basis of five chair designs by Aalto and additional designs
by Ilmari Tapiovaara, Yrjö Kukkapuro, Yrjö Viherheimo
and Jouko Järvisalo.
