Lucas Maassen let his three sons Thijme (9), Julian (7), and Maris (7) paint his handmade furniture. The boys signed a contract, which stated that they would receive one euro for every piece of furniture that they painted. But according to Dutch child labour laws, they were only allowed to work three hours per week. This made speed a crucial factor in the production process of Lucas Maassen & Sons. The strict time limitations contributed to the distinctive aesthetic of LM&S furniture.
