CAD design

This installation by graphic designer Lukas Engelhardt bridges DING Vitrine with Do the Right DING at Het Arsenaal, where the Gent Waste Brick for DING is produced.

The project invites you to reflect on the invisible infrastructures required to maintain online connections. As videoconferencing tools become increasingly high-res and low-latency, and we accumulate countless, never-to-be-seen-again photos on our smartphones, the question arises: how much information transfer and storage is really needed to create a sense of connection?

At Het Arsenaal, a mobile computer with a camera takes one picture every minute. Visitors can move it around and choose what is captured. The photos are collected on a website, a display of which can be seen in DING Vitrine on the four screens. Like bricks in a wall, the images form a low-fidelity live stream. To reduce their digital footprint, each image degrades from full resolution to single pixels. As the resolution shifts from time (1440 min/day) to space (1440 px/line), a new image emerges from these smallest building blocks. A sprite, almost noise, but not quite. An echo, not an archive.
