Open call for designers

Windows of Design

To mark the reopening of Design Museum Gent and Design Fest Gent, we are joining forces with various design and interior design shops in Ghent. Together, we want to bring design to the forefront of the city’s streetscape.

That is why we are looking for designers who want to literally put one or more objects in the spotlight in a shop window in Ghent.

The shop windows will become small public exhibition spaces where design attracts attention, surprises and invites people to look. We are looking for objects that make a powerful visual statement, real eye-catchers that make passers-by stop and look.

The selected designs will feature a distinctive aesthetic and tell their own story. They will spark the imagination, raise questions or offer an unexpected perspective on how we interact with objects in our daily lives. A jury, comprising representatives from Design Museum Gent and external experts, will select up to 25 objects to participate in the shop window trail.

What are we looking for?

  • A strong and striking object that can be presented convincingly in a shop window
  • A real eye-catcher or ‘showstopper’ that attracts the attention of passers-by
  • This could be an object, a utility item, a small series or an experimental product
  • The object has a clear design language and its own recognisable character
  • The design stimulates curiosity, encourages reflection or offers an unexpected perspective

Practical details

  • The selected works will be exhibited in a shop window from 30 September to 11 October 2026 (set-up on 28 and 29 September, dismantling on 12 and 13 October).
  • The designer is responsible for the transport, installation and removal of the work, in consultation with the shop owner.
  • The work will remain in the display window for the entire period.
  • The designer is responsible for insuring the work.

What do we offer?

  • A fee of €350 (excl. VAT) per selected design
  • Crediting as a designer in communications relating to Design Fest Gent and the reopening of Design Museum Gent

Who can participate?

This open call is open to designers, makers and design collectives from various design disciplines.
