Wilhelm Wagenfeld designed these modular glass food containers for Vereinigte Lausitzer Glaswerke, the company whose artistic director he became in 1935. Kubus is stackable and therefore space-saving. Rational, functional, perfectly suited to mass production, and yet aesthetic: Wagenfeld’s democratically priced design was unmistakably a product of Bauhaus, where he was both a student and a teacher. He was an advocate of mechanical production, but he believed that only useful, lasting and beautiful everyday objects could be made. He considered inferior products to be harmful to society because they demanded work hours from the factory workers to the sellers. According to Wagenfeld, you could not expect lasting beauty from non-lasting objects, although lasting beauty was an important quality of design, which was supposed to improve the quality of life of its user.
