This cheerful merry-go-round is fitted with miniatures of 35 bestsellers by the Italian household-appliance company Alessi. Among others you will recognize the corkscrew Anna G and the fruit press Juicy Salif by Philippe Starck. The prototype of this merry-go-round was shown in 2000 at an exhibition about 50 years of Italian and German design in the Bundeskunsthalle in Bonn. Alessandro Mendini, designer and advisor of Alessi, saw in the carousel a fitting image for the dreamworld that the company wanted to conjure and in which design and art were close to one another. Our museum acquired a copy of La Giostra for the collection, and it soon became a favourite among the public. The carousel also illustrates how Alessi successfully managed to obtain a place for himself in design collections the world over.
