collection Design Museum Gent

Linde Hermans (1974) designs furniture, accessories, installations and scenographies. She has worked with Piet Stockmans, Casimir and shoe manufacturer Ambiorix, among others, and is one of the driving forces behind the collective Het Labo. Her work sits on the borderline between design and visual arts. Subtlety is a common thread in her oeuvre. This recliner is an early work — she received the Henry van de Velde Award for Young Talent only eight years later. She designed the seat at the invitation of a small metalworking company. The construction is very inventive: a thin piece of saddle leather floats between rolled metal plates of the same thickness. The seat is detachable, making it easy to transport, and to replace the leather.

First chair is part of the Future Primitives series, presented in 2012 at the Interieur Biennale in Kortrijk. As the name suggests, it is the first chair designed by Muller Van Severen. A characteristic of the Future Primitives range is that different functions are brought together in one piece of furniture. First chair is an exception, but is still part of the series as their oeuvre was missing a chair at that point. The L-shaped white lacquered steel frames and the polyethylene seat and back fit in with the aesthetics of Muller Van Severen’s first exhibition.
