Henry van de Velde inspired several generations of designers with his defence of a rational and functional design. He spent an important part of his career path in Weimar in Germany, where the authorities commissioned him to super­vise the modernization of the local arts and crafts. It is in Weimar too that he founded a school that was literally the precursor of the Bauhaus. After the war, Bauhaus, under the direction of the young Walter Gropius, took over its spaces and some of its teachers and students. Gropius also built on the pedagogy of Van de Velde, in which the importance of the craftsperson’s artistic training was essential. The project put forward by Gropius was more radical and more utopian, however. Indeed, Gropius wanted to train designers who were at one and the same time artists, craftspeople and industrialists: self-confident all-rounders who, after a preliminary training by abstract artists and a specialization, would design the new world.
