Gravity Stool 2012

Jólan van der Wiel NL

plastic, iron powder

purchase from the designer, 2016

Jólan van der Wiel researches how he can employ natural forces in the field of design. For his Gravity Collection he started out from the physical phenomena of gravity and magnetism. He developed a machine, the Gravity Tool, which makes use of magnetic fields to let liquid synthetics mixed with iron powder ‘grow upward’ before the material coagulates. This generates unique pieces with unpredictable organic forms. Van der Wiel wants to leave the design process up to nature as much as possible. The invisible and even undetectable forces become perceptible as the object takes shape. The designer only determines the technological circumstances under which the forces of nature interact with one another. According to Jólan van der Wiel, there is a lot of potential here for the design sector.
