Cupboard for House Thyl van de Velde

Henry van de Velde (1863-1957) designed the furniture of this dining room in 1929 as a gift for the marriage of his son Thyl to Leentje Teirlinck, the youngest daughter of the writer Herman Teirlinck. Art Nouveau was already a thing of the past. Van de Velde had returned to Belgium after a long stay in Germany. He was about to be commissioned to build the Ghent Book Tower. The furniture for Thyl looks sober and was made by the firm De Cunsel of Molenbeek. Both Herman Teirlinck and his other son-in-law, avant-garde artist Karel Maes, were in charge there for a while. It was not until a restoration in 2019 that the original blue colour of the furniture surfaced.
