Dressing table
Séraphin Van den Hoeck BE
(probably) circa 1930-1940
wood, marble, mirror glass, leaf metal
collection Design Museum Gent

This dressing table in Art Deco style is probably the work of Séraphin Van den Hoeck (1904-?). His furniture company was located in the Sint-Pietersnieuwstraat in Ghent from 1927. His father also made furniture, as a sculptor and woodcarver. Van den Hoeck designed in neo-styles but also made contemporary furniture, probably in co-operation with architects. They feature rounded corners and the recognisable geometric shapes from Art Deco, and are decorated with shiny piping in relief. The furniture was finished with veneer or simply lacquered in striking colours, such as the fresh green of this example. The dressing table comes from the bedroom of a house on Blekerijstraat. The bed, a wardrobe and two chairs were also preserved.
