Dirk Vander Kooij NL

recycled plastic

purchase from the designer, 2016

For his Endless series, Dirk Vander Kooij programmed an existing robot arm to 3D-print furniture with a single, continual recycled plastic thread. His designs are therefore industrial, but his aim is not mass production: he does not make perfect products, but unique pieces of industrial quality. He likes to work with recycled materials, such as plastic from old fridges or CD boxes, because they make the past visible. The thickness of the plastic thread also renders the production process legible, which is generally not the case in 3D-printed objects. This fits Vander Kooij’s design philosophy, where the process used to arrive at a product is just as important as the end result. So you can easily call Dirk Vander Kooij a new artisan. He may not work with his hands, but he embraces the technology that he applies completely and with due respect for the individuality of the material.
