Knotted Chair combines handicraft and high tech. Marcel Wanders knotted rope from carbon fibres and aramid fibres to form a chair using the traditional technique of macramé. He then immersed the cord in epoxy resin and hung it up so that the chair could harden in the right shape with the help of gravity. The result – a solid seat made from a supple textile – seems unreal. Knotted Chair was one of the designs that grew out of the Dry Tech I project by the Dutch collective Droog Design, during which designers collaborated with researchers from the Faculty of Aerospace Engineering at the Delft University of Technology. The intention of this project was to experiment with new materials and craft techniques. Wanders was the ideal person for this: his designs often combine traditional and high-tech procedures and materials.
