Fantasy Design

Fantasy Design is an international project in which schoolchildren are the main actors and producers of design. The Design Museum Gent is a partner to tis project. Fantasy Design is a design education project consisting of activities aimed at schools and special training and teaching materials for teachers. The most visible result of the project is an international touring exhibition of works by schoolchildren.
These designs are 65 models/prototypes that were selected among 223 projects by an international jury of experts. No less than 25 contributions come from Flemish youngsters. The jury was particularly impressed by the enthusiasm with which participants introduced problems from their own environment and by their attempts to make this environment more pleasant or better. The feasibility of the concepts was not taken into account during the selection. The jury just wants to stress the importance of fantasy in designs. Texts, drawings or pictures were used to give more explanation about the models on exhibition. A car-plane, a reversible chair, a finger shoe, ... those are only a few examples of the designs on display.
Fantasy Design is promoting basic skills in design: problem-solving, cultural thinking, artistic expression, and an innovative attitude to work. An awareness and appreciation of objects is promoted, as well as an interdisciplinary approach taking into account historical, social and economic points of view.
